Quick Start Guide
- Download & Open
Install PicPlate from the App Store and open the app. No account creation required!
- Set Up Your Profile (Optional)
Connect to Apple Health to get personalized calorie goals based on your body metrics and activity level, or skip this step and use default goals.
- Take Your First Photo
Tap the camera button and snap a photo of your meal. The AI will analyze it in seconds and provide calorie and macro information.
- Refine If Needed
Not quite right? Tap the refine button and tell the AI what to adjust (e.g., "more rice, less chicken"). Your analysis updates instantly.
Getting Started
Do I need to create an account?
No! PicPlate doesn't require any account creation. Just download the app and start tracking. All your data stays on your device.
How do I take the best photos for accurate results?
Take photos from directly above your meal with good lighting. Include the entire plate in the frame. The AI works with any food and cuisine, but clearer photos lead to more accurate results.
Can I track multiple meals per day?
Yes! Track as many meals as you want. Each photo is added to your visual diary and counts toward your daily nutrition goals.
Features & Functionality
How does the refine feature work?
After getting your initial analysis, tap the refine button and type simple instructions like "more vegetables" or "less sauce". The AI will adjust the nutritional analysis based on your feedback without needing a new photo.
What is the visual diary?
Your visual diary is an automatic timeline of all your meal photos. It helps you see eating patterns, track progress visually, and stay motivated by viewing your nutrition journey over time.
How accurate is the nutritional information?
PicPlate uses advanced AI models to provide estimates based on visual analysis. While generally accurate, results are estimates and may vary. The refine feature helps you improve accuracy for specific meals.
Does PicPlate work offline?
You need an internet connection to analyze photos since our AI processing happens securely in the cloud. However, you can view your meal history and diary offline.
Privacy & Security
What happens to my photos?
Your photos are sent securely to our AI service for analysis and are deleted immediately after processing (within seconds). We do not store your photos or use them to train AI models.
Where is my data stored?
All your personal data, meal history, and preferences are stored locally on your device using encrypted storage. Your data never leaves your device except for the temporary photo processing. If you have iCloud Backup enabled on your iOS device, your app data is automatically backed up to your personal iCloud account for device migration and recovery.
How do I delete my data?
You can delete individual meals within the app, or delete all data by removing the app from your device. Since we don't require accounts, there's no server-side data to delete. Note: If you manually delete the app, iOS automatically removes the associated iCloud backup data as well.
Will my data be restored if I get a new phone?
Yes! If you have iCloud Backup enabled, all your meals, photos, and settings will automatically be restored when you set up your new iPhone and restore from your iCloud backup. We have no access to your iCloud backups - it's handled entirely by iOS.
Troubleshooting
The app crashes or freezes
Try force-closing the app and reopening it. Make sure you're running the latest version of PicPlate and iOS. If problems persist, contact us at support@picplate.io with your device model and iOS version.
Photo analysis is taking too long
Analysis typically takes 5-7 seconds. If it's taking longer, check your internet connection. Poor connectivity can slow down the AI processing. Try switching between WiFi and cellular data.
The analysis results seem inaccurate
Use the refine feature to adjust the results! Simply tap refine and tell the AI what needs to be changed. For best initial results, take photos from directly above with good lighting.
Apple Health integration isn't working
Go to iOS Settings > Health > Data Access & Devices > PicPlate and ensure all necessary permissions are granted.
System Requirements
- iOS 15.0 or later
- Internet connection required for photo analysis
- Device camera for taking meal photos
- Minimal storage space (meals stored locally)
